“As her keel came to rest in the Pevensey shingle, so a unique culture was born. Duke William's flagship, Mora, flew the standard of St Peter, a white flag with a cross of gold, from her masthead. She was the finest and swiftest of a 500-strong armada, built for one purpose: to seize the English Crown. Over 12,000 men waded ashore on 29th September 1066. In their ranks were Normans, drawn from Sicily to the Channel Islands - the Duke's personal protectorate - along with Breton and Flemish divisions and 3,000 horses.
